Jake for stratigraphy
Easily measure stratigraphic sections
Jake makes measuring stratigraphic sections easy. Lay your phone on a bedding plane, and in one tap, record its dip and dip direction. Jake then shows you how to incline your phone to match the dip and direction with arrows and bold numbers. When the arrows disappear and the numbers are bold, your phone is now oriented parallel to bedding.
Jake can be used with any Jacob’s staff, but it is especially designed to be used with our 3-printed Jacob’s staff and laser-pointer combination, which makes it much faster to measure long sights and oblique sights with greatly increased accuracy. 3-D printer plans for this staff are available at the UGA Stratigraphy Lab, and the paper describing the staff is published in the Journal of Sedimentary Research.
